Tour of Britain 2009 – Stage 2 – Darlington to Newcastle – Sunday 13th September

tour_of_britainThe second stage of cycling’s Tour of Britain comes to the region on Sunday 13th September, taking in almost all the major sites of the area. Over 100 riders from seventeen teams will race on eight stages across the country this month, and the stage starting in Darlington and ending on the banks of the Tyne looks to bring cycling fans out for what promises to be an exciting weekend.

tour-of-britian-2008-by-johnthescone-at-flickrCarlton Reid of BikeBiz.com was born and raised in Newcastle and is looking forward to the arrival of the Tour in the north east. “Because it’s late in the season, it’s a very open competition. There will be no out and out favourites, unless Mark Cavendish starts! In previous years, a long breakaway on first day has all but settled the whole tour. With an added day this year, there will be less likelihood of this happening so will make for a more open and interesting.”

Alessandro Petacchi won the stage last year with a time of 3 hours 45 minutes 9 seconds and those riders – with or without British hero Mark Cavendish – will be aiming to better the Italian nicknamed Ale-jet.

The riders are expected to finish around 2pm on Sunday in Newcastle, so if you’re looking to get along to the closing stages of the Tour of Britain’s sojourn in the region then take a look at the Stage 2 map (http://www.tourofbritain.co.uk/_ns_pdf/stage_2_route_map.pdf ) and be at the Quayside in the early afternoon of the 13th.
