Gateshead is located next to the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, on the banks of the River Tyne in north-east England.
The population of Gateshead totals some 79,000 inhabitants making it small in comparison to the neighbouring city of Newcastle, but as the centre of Gateshead and Newcastle are extremely close, the two combine to make the main core of Tyneside.
Although Gateshead is not huge, the town has a wonderful history dating back to the times of the Romans. Gateshead has been named in numerous historical documents, and was the location where William the Conqueror defeated Edgar the Atheling and Malcolm, King of Scotland, in 1068.
Today Gateshead has a big reputation both nationally and internationally with modern architecture alongside classic examples of history, set alongside the wonderful environemnt of the River Tyne.
