The 5th Birthday of the Design Event festival takes place this year from 16th October to 25th October 2009 with a packed programme of events and exhibitions based around the theme of Politics and Play.

Design Event 09 focusses on the design of products, graphics, illustration, fashion and architecture from all across the North East of England, celebrating the area’s innovation and creativity.

Last year’s Event 08 had over 180,000 visitors who enjoyed architectural tours, design talks, exhibitions and a fashion show: Design Event 09 promises to deliver once again and much more!

Design Event Talks in association with Newcastle College

barnbrook_friendly-fires20th October: Jonathan Barnbrook
Time: 6.00pm
Venue: DanceCity, Temple Street, Newcastle upon Tyne
“Jonathan Barnbrook and his studio have been active since 1990, working across a broad range of disciplines including graphic design, industrial design, typeface design and film. Based in London, the studio divides its time between commercial work on an international basis for museums and cultural institutions and non-commercial projects.”

fat_hoogvliet-03622nd October: Sam Jacob from Fashion Architecture Taste (FAT)
Time: 6.00pm
Venue: DanceCity, Temple Street, Newcastle upon Tyne
“Sam Jacob is a founding director of FAT, architect, writer and critic.  He has been responsible for a range of award winning projects including the Hoogvliet Heerlijkheid – a park and cultural centre in the Netherlands which won a RIBA European Award and was shortlisted for the World Architecture Award.
FATs projects engage with the world around them through familiar references, graphic boldness, humour and a desire to communicate. From objects to buildings and masterplans, FAT use the idea of play as a way of speculative thinking, suggesting that design is about developing scenarios and narratives addressing social and cultural activity rather than producing singular functional solutions.”
