Christmas Fairs in and around Newcastle upon Tyne 2009

The run up to Christmas time would not be complete without a visit to a Christmas fair, and the city of Newcastle has a great range to choose from.

Whether you want to get in the mood by sampling Christmas food and drink, as you wander in your scarf and gloves looking for a gift for that ‘hard to buy for’ relative, or you are seeking a fun time for you and the children, you will find it in Newcastle.

These Christmas fairs and markets provide a good taster of what’s on offer in style and price.

A Continental Christmas?

Newcastle may not have won European City of Culture (yet!), but it is still a first class European city and is once again inviting stall holders from across Europe to take part in the now annual continental market in the run up to Christmas.

christmas-market-by-dimitry-bGrey’s Monument is a great place to visit this Christmas: in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne and running from Monday 23rd November to Saturday 5th December, Monument hosts the Continental Market with stalls from France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Spain and elsewhere all turning up to provide you with food, drink and handicrafts for your Christmas ideas.

Pick your Christmas gifts and foods from a choice of Belgian Chocolates, German Sausages, Dutch plants and bulbs, and more from across the continent.

After a short break, the Christmas Market starts proper on Wednesday 9th December running to Sunday 13th December.

This will showcase local traders selling traditional Christmas fare and handcrafted gifts.

With over 50 stalls around the dramatic surroundings of Grey’s Monument, street performers playing for the crowds as they sip their mulled wine, this will be a truly entertaining Christmas fair.

Christmas and a Good Cause

Finally, if you want a bit of fun at the fair and you want perhaps want to take your kids, relax and also contribute to a good cause, then visit the Christmas Fair at St Oswald’s hospice.

The theme of the Christmas Fair this year is festive films and volunteers will be dressed as characters from these seasonal movies to entertain the children while you pick up gifts and eat too many mince pies!

There will also be a visit from Santa for the children (and adults) and bands will entertain everyone all afternoon, providing enough goodwill to keep the all visitors happy throughout the afternoon.

This takes place on Saturday 28th November from 11.00am to 3.00pm at St Oswald’s and is £1 entry for adults (all for a great cause) with under 12s going free.
