wunderbar-festival-2009The Wunderbar Festival 2009

The Wunderbar Festival is an eclectic participatory extravaganza happening right here in Newcastle from the 6th to the 16th November 2009.   Visual art, an array of theatrical and contemporary performances and extraordinary events make up this unique festival that spans the city using everything from the internet to disused public spaces as its venues.

Bringing people to the heart of the festival and interacting with audiences is at the core of the spectacle and you can expect to learn, be amazed and entertained if you go and take part.

Most events within Wunderbar are free so you can just turn up and get involved, however you will need to book or purchase tickets for the events taking place in seated venues or some workshops.

Begin at the Beginning!

A good place to begin finding out what’s happening at Wunderbar would be the Hub.

This is at the Jam in the Wunderbar Doughnut (venue to be confirmed via the Festival website) and is the HQ for finding out what is happening in Newcastle and getting involved, the nearest Metro to the Hub will be Monument.

You can have a coffee, meet the artists, give your views to them and take part should you wish!

from-here-on-outHere On Out

The event FROM HERE ON OUT starts from the Hub: a 45-minute sound and vision walk, using multimedia players collected from the Hub (requires a credit card to cover deposit) to drive the tour.

This is an inspiring and illuminating alternative look at what makes the city tick.

You will experience x-ray vision of the layers, themes and substructures that form the city of Newcastle, opening your eyes to things you never knew lay beneath, behind and beyond your ordinary vision.

1 hour slots are available from 10.00am to 3.00pm, Saturday 7th November – Sunday 15th November.

You can also contribute personally to the daily festival videos, in the live film quick-edit station – become part of the festival yourself!

Shakespeare Speaks

You may notice something otherworldly about a number of public announcements during the Wunderbar Festival’s presence in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Announcements at public places such as bus and Metro stations will be relayed in a Shakespearean style throughout the festival, and you can learn more about Shakespearean language yourself at one of the RSC workshops.

Star and Shadow and INX

On the arty side, an inspiring collaboration and cultural exchange will be celebrating diversity and commonality with the fusion of 5 artists from the North East and 5 from Istanbul in the INX – Istanbul Newcastle Xchange.

instanbul-newcastle-xchangeNew works and performances will be revealed as well as discussion, participation, music and food at the Star and Shadow over two days.

This event is completely free.

Starting at 3.00pm on Monday 9th November and 3.30pm on Tuesday 10th November it will run well into the night: expect a lively and fun end to both evenings.

A Full Festival Calendar

There is literally something for everyone at Wunderbar – 28 named events over the duration of the festival.

From Children to the Elderly, from the bizarre to the traditional, this is a celebration more than a standard festival and what is listed is simply a taster.

You are strongly encouraged to visit their website, find out what else is happening and celebrate with all the artists and audience throughout the festival.

Enjoy!
