The Shipley Art Gallery is a delightful little institution in Gateshead, showing some of the best the region has to offer in art and performance.

The Baltic Art Gallery may be more famous now, and the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle City Centre more prevalent, but the Shipley is what art is all about and what makes a local art gallery what it is.

This prized little art gallery is in a beautiful Grade II listed Edwardian Building, and as you head up the stairs and under the pillars into the place you realize you are somewhere special.
It may be a modest place but don’t be fooled, the Shipley Art Gallery has a strong link with the V & A Museum in London, and over the last couple of decades has established itself as a national centre of excellence in contemporary craftwork – housing one of the best collections of ceramic, wood, metal, textiles and glass artworks, and continues to host contemporary displays of this type.

The Shipley was first opened to the public in 1917 thanks to the generosity of Joseph Shipley, a wealthy local art collector who left enough in his will to ensure the creation of the Shipley Art Gallery, and at the time of his death had amassed 25,000 art works.

Shipley Art Gallery ExhibitionsThis passion for the arts is still evident at Shipley Art Gallery today and the local community is very much part of gallery in terms of art and performances, as The Shipley continues to offer free events to the community and visitors alike.

Furthermore, Shipley Art Gallery holds a painting depicting one of the most cherished days in Geordie Culture from days gone by (and still sung about on football terraces at St James’ Park today): William C. Irving’s famous painting of the Blaydon Races takes pride of place at the gallery, and is a delightful, colourful insight into the festivities of the day.

On your visit to the Shipley Art Gallery you can also take in a walk around nearby Saltwell Park to let what you have just been viewing sink in, in relaxing and peaceful surroundings. This Victorian park has lovely landscaped walks, a boating lake and views from open spaces, taking you away from the bustle of central Gateshead.

The Shipley Art Gallery offers a wonderful day out to view art close up in an unfussy way which, I’m sure, is how art is intended to be enjoyed.
This free gallery is tucked away in the Gateshead community between Bensham and Deckham just off the A167 on Prince Consort Road, conveniently near the Gateshead Metro station.
