Newcastle City Hall and City Pool

Newcastle City Hall and Newcastle City Pool

Newcastle City Hall (by Ian Grey)There is an unassuming but delightful building on Northumberland Road, near to Newcastle Haymarket Metro station, that houses two absolute institutions of the City of Newcastle. Both will be well known to all of Newcastle upon Tyne’s inhabitants, even if they haven’t used them very recently!

These are Newcastle City Hall and Newcastle City Pool (including the famous Turkish Baths).

Newcastle City Hall is an absolute gem of a venue in the heart of Newcastle that all Geordies are both fond of and proud of, and the City Pool along with the Turkish Baths have been keeping hard working Geordies fit and refreshed for decades.

The City Hall was opened in 1927 as part of Newcastle’s redevelopment, which also included the City Pool. The Harrison and Harrison Organ was added in 1928 to give Newcastle its first dedicated concert venue.

For almost 40 years, Newcastle City Hall hosted concerts by major British Orchestras featuring conductors such as Sir Malcolm Sargent and soloists such as Yehudi Menuhin and Kathleen Ferrier. In addition to orchestras, local choirs and societies held their annual concerts and there were celebrity recitals and talks as well as Civic functions. The City Hall has continued to host almost every rock and pop “great” since the 60′s as well as seeing the first tours of future music legends.Newcastle City Hall Interior

Throughout the 70′s, 80′s and 90′s the City Hall maintained its position as one of the best and most used 2000 seated venues in the country, and one of many artists’ favourite gigs: Bruce Springsteen rates the City Hall show in 1981 as one of his best three shows, and both Dire Straits and Elton John insisted on starting world tours in the Hall.

The main acts you will find at Newcastle City Hall nowadays will be pop and rock concerts and comedy acts, and the venue appears on many national and world tours by artists on top of their game. The capacity is 2135 with stalls and a balcony, creating at one time a cosy arena in comparison with some aircraft hangar type venues that now exist, but if you’ve ever been there you will recognise it also has such a unique energy – so much so that many artists demand it is included on their tour dates both national and international.

While you are at the building buying your tickets, you might as well pop in for a swim, or more adventurously try out the popular Turkish baths!
These are Victorian style Turkish Baths in elegant surroundings, and are open most of the week with alternative times for men and women.

Tucked away on the edge of Newcastle City Centre, this legendary place with quite differing pleasures is well worth a visit.
