The Sage Gateshead: A Festival Of Music!
The Sage Gateshead is an open door style of place, looking to involve anyone and everyone who walks into the inspiring centre.
It is open on average for 14 hours each and every day of the week, with standard public opening times in the Winter months from 9.00am to 9.00pm, where you can just walk in and look around.
Classy Design, Good Music at The Sage Gateshead
Since opening in 2004 The Sage Gateshead has attracted international attention for various reasons, one being the absolute magnificence and innovative bravery of the design by internationally recognised architect Norman Foster: the unique and classy building looks as if it has risen out of the river itself, to stand proudly alongside its new brother – the famous Tyne Bridge. It is also internationally renowned because it does what it set out to do, excellently: to become a premier international music venue of all types whilst also remaining embedded in the community it was born from, Gateshead, and involving everyone who wants to in the development of music.
Philharmonic and Opera talent from across the globe have graced the inspiring stages at the Sage, as has some international pop and rock talent, but what the makes the Sage unique is that it is not just a venue but also a music centre committed to developing the creation of music and musical talent – as well as providing a space where visitors can become involved and enjoy music at any level.
The Sage Gateshead: Northern Sinfonia and Folkworks
The Sage Gateshead also has two resident institutions that are known throughout the music world: The Northern Sinfonia and Folkworks – both have been doing amazing work since they first began playing and are involved in the developmental side of music within the Sage.
Northern Sinfonia is one of Europe’s most exciting chamber orchestras, covering a full range of Western classical music through to specially commissioned new works.
Folkworks brings together folk talent from across the North and further afield, producing an eclectic range of performances and workshops based on music from across the world.
Folkwork Tuesdays are set to be lively workshops for all levels beginning in 2010 – they also currently run many beginner
courses including ukulele, drumming lessons, steel pans and ‘Jazz4everyone’.
