The deep and sheltered nature of the gorge (and its western location) provides a humid microclimate in the ancient woodland and other habitats here which is favourable for bryophytes.
Mosses and liverworts are both abundant and diverse at this site. The epiphytes are particularly diverse and include several locally uncommon liverworts.
The site has not been well‐explored for bryophytes and we are likely to find new species. The diminutive oceanic liverwort Microlejeunea ulicina, or “fairy beads”, was found here for the first time in Northumberland as recently as 2006.
