Are you up for an adrenaline pumping challenge, zipping 280m on a fixed wire above the River Tyne? Forget the bridge, you’re taking the scenic route!

Imagine marvelling at the city skyline as you stand among the rooftops preparing to glide across one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Starting 40m up, from the roof of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, you will travel 918ft diagonally across the River Tyne before landing on the Newcastle quayside.

This is a one off experience, so gather your friends, family and colleagues and get ready to zip! Don’t forget to embrace the 80′s theme, dust off your shoulder pads, roll up your leg warmers and shout ‘Cowabunga!’ while raising vital funds for The Stroke Association.

The Challenge takes place on the 17 & 18 of March 2012, at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, Entry is £10, and participants need £95 in donations. Participants will also receive a free gift and certificate!

The Great North City Games | 18th September 2010

The day before the Great North Run takes places sees the Bupa Great North City Games 2010, England versus Australia, take place on the streets of Newcastle.

Free to watch the event includes top international atheletes go head to head in the pole vault, long jump, track sprints and road races.

Time: 1pm to 2.30pm

Junior and Mini Great North Run

Also on Saturday 18th September is the special Great North Run held for Juniors and ‘Minis’ on Newcastle’s Quayside. The first Bupa Junior Great North Run Wheelchair Race sets off at 10.30am, followed by three waves of Bupa Mini Runsat 11am, 11.30am and 12pm, finishing with two waves of Bupa Junior Great North Runs setting off at 2.20pm and 3.10pm.

Charities

Remember a Charity is one of the biggest UK cross-charity campaigns, and it’s first awareness week will take place 13-19 September, the aim of which will be to encourage more people to leave a gift to charity in their will.

A number of their charities will mark the end of the week at the Bupa Great North Run.

Rob Cope, director at Remember A Charity, said: “The Great North Run has a fabulous track record of supporting good causes, so it’s fitting that we can mark the end of Remember A Charity Week at the world’s biggest half marathon”.

“Many people in the UK don’t realise that they can give money to charities in their will, but the truth is, after looking after family and friends, a small share of whatever is left can make a real difference to charities and the invaluable work they do.”

For further information on the campaign please visit www.rememberacharity.org.uk

The Great North Run raises over 28 million pounds for charity every single year and many of the charity organisations will be glad to have you running on their team.

Celebrities

As ever, a number of celebrities will be showing their support (and stamina!) by taking part and getting involved in this year’s Great North Run. So if a day of celeb spotting is for you then Newcastle is definitely the place to be this weekend.

Just some of the faces you might spot include: Stuart Manning, Sarah Jay Dunn, Abi Raven, John Pickard – all from Hollyoaks, Joe McElderry (X factor), Scott Mills (Radio 1), Graham Hawley, Vicky Binns, Graeme Proctor, Conor Ryan (Coronation Street), James Thornton, Jeff Hordley, John Middleton, Matthew Wolfenden, Nicola Wheeler, Noah Huntley, Tom Lister, Tony Audenshaw (Emmerdale).

Road Closures

Planning the Great North Run itself may well be one of the greatest challenges faced this weekend but after 29 previous years of practise the event runs like a well-oiled machine.

Road closures commence on Saturday evening with the A167 being closed from 8pm right through to 5pm on Sunday.

Other road closures take place throughout the route from 8.45am to 5pm on the Sunday.

The Great North Run 2010

BBC TV Coverage of the Great North Run kicks at 9.30am and goes through to 12pm, folllowed by red button coverage from 12pm to 1.40pm and back to live coverage from 1.40pm to 2.25pm.
