Christmas Fashion Ideas from Emma Newman of Emma’s Boutique

As the dark nights have suddenly crept up on us our thoughts seem to naturally drift towards the Xmas party season. It may be a big night out with the girls, the work Xmas do, or a family get-together, but we always plan our outfits in advance to make sure we are as dazzling as the fairy lights on the tree!

The High Street is now full of cocktail dresses, fabulous embellished tops and sparkly sequin minis (which I adore!). My tip with anything that sits high above the knee is to wear super thick opaque tights to spare your blushes- far better to be demure if you plan on drinking lots of Cosmopolitans! As expected, I tend to keep my outfits simple and focus on my accessories, meaning I can re-use items in my wardrobe or invest in classic pieces. Zara have a fantastic range of shift and cocktail dresses in a huge range of colours – pick out jewel colours such a Ruby and Teal – which can be used as office wear, then ‘jazzed’ up for impromptu cocktails after work. Keep a pair of killer heels under the desk just in case!

The 80s seem to have made another comeback (Why do we all like shoulder pads and birds nest hair so much?!), so expect to see neon, puffball skirts, animal prints and sequins aplenty. Dorothy Perkins have this fab sequin blazer in stock, perfect for teaming with some skinny jeans and heels. If this is sequin overkill (shameless plug alert!), Emma’s Boutique have this lovely sequin clutch in a range of colours (Silver, Purple, Blue and Black). We also love this fab snakeskin clutch. These mini handbags will continue to be a staple style over the coming seasons, so invest in a style and fabric that has a timeless appeal.

Emma Newman Tells Us How to Wear Orange!

As all fashion savvy girlies know, we sometimes have to adapt catwalk trends to suit our lifestyles and body shapes. I personally have run scared from the jumpsuit trend that has dominated the catwalks over the last few seasons- I’m not a 6ft Amazonian!

But this week I decided to be brave and try out something new- treggings in Dorothy Perkins (leggings/ trouser hybrid. Can be found in denim- eeek!). I felt they possibly wouldn’t be so forgiving on a mum of one, and I was haunted with visions of muffin tops and chunky thighs. I am happy to report, however, that I shouldn’t have been such a Nervous Nelly. Teamed with a slightly loose fitting tee and some lovely heels they happen to look fab. The moral of this tale is to be brave as you never know what new wardrobe treasure you might find. I might even be convinced by skinny jeans yet!

Can you wear Orange?

As you can imagine, I talk A LOT about fashion with my friends, and the subject of how to wear colour is frequently raised. Orange has been big news on the catwalks for A/W 09, a colour which seems to fill people with dread. I feel there are many ways to wear this colour, and think it is much more forgiving than Red, for example. Dismiss all notions of being the Tango woman, this can work for everyone- even redheads!

The shade you choose is the determining factor.

A redhead should probably go for a burnt orange shade (Benetton do a fabulous double breasted coat for £105- perfect for taking you into Winter).

I personally feel the best way to use this colour is to use it as a detail to lift an outfit- there are lots of orange accessories around. I sell an orange pashmina in my collection, it’s a great way to add an affordable and on-trend ‘pop’ of colour. New Look also sell a fabulous puffball style skirt with contrasting black bow (bows are still very fashionable this season, thank goodness!), which will be great for a girls night out.

When you start writing about fashion, the impulse is to justify what makes you better equipped than any other girl to write this.Truth is, I’m probably not!

I find out what I know through pouring over endless fashion magazines, just like every other girl!

What does set me apart, and makes my friends very jealous, is that I run my own online fashion accessory boutique. This means I get sent pictures of handbags and jewellery as they are being designed by top companies, so I often find out about trends ahead of time. When sourcing my own products, I look for pieces that are fashionable and affordable, and I also look for items that are a little bit different to what is found on the High Street.

Because of the dreaded ‘R’ word, a lot of people are thinking ‘thrifty’ when it comes to their A/ W wardrobes. I’ve seen a shift on the High Street towards providing basic, timeless pieces (known as the capsule wardrobe), instead of the trend led items we used to hit the likes of Topshop for. Us girlies now head to Primarni (as I affectionately call it!) to pick up the ‘fashion’ pieces that feature weekly in Look and Grazia magazine. We want to spend less on these items because we know that a neon puffball skirt is going to sit at the back of our wardrobe after a couple of (possibly alcohol fuelled) wears!

A canny way of updating your wardrobe without breaking the bank is to buy on-trend accessories. Statement jewellery, such as gob-stopper gem rings and bling chandelier earrings, are still big fashion news for the Autumn. My Statement Gem Necklace (£14) can be worn to dress up a t-shirt, but looks equally stylish with an LBD. I wear mine with a band t-shirt, jeans and stiletto boots to nail the ‘Rock Chick’ look. Another way is to add a ‘pop’ of colour with a stand-out item, like a scarf or a pair of killer heels. Matalan do a fantastic range of neon heels and leopard print flats at the moment, meaning you can buy a couple of pairs and not worry about your bank manager.

Like a girl needs an excuse to buy shoes!
