• Original children’s art for sale to support the education of Cambodian children

The Cambodian Children’s Painting Project (CCPP) is to exhibit a range of original paintings by almost 100 Cambodian children in Newcastle on July 5th at The Biscuit Factory.

The exhibition is part of a 24-city European tour by CCPP this spring and summer to raise money, vital to provide ongoing educational support to more than 100 children in the Sihanoukville region of Cambodia.

The exhibitions opening to the public is from 18:30-21:00 on Monday the 5th of July, with 100 small and 20 large paintings for sale from between 15-150 pounds each.

Felix Brooks-church, General Manager of the Cambodian Children’s Painting Project (CCPP) comments: “The current economic climate has significantly affected tourism numbers in Cambodia, so rather than waiting for the world to come to us, we thought we’d bring the children’s paintings to the world.

“CCPP works directly with families in Cambodia to make it possible for more than 100 children to attend school. We create a safe and supportive place where the children can learn, play and express themselves through daily activities such as painting, drawing and sculpture, as well as sports, English and computing classes. We also provide food, medical care and clean clothing – which all plays a part in ensuring that the children stay in school for as long as possible.

“The majority of the children involved in the Project live in terrible conditions and lack regular access to food, clean water and medical care. They have little or no education and make money by collecting cans and plastic bottles. Sadly, they are often the victims of violent abuse and paedophilia.

“Our hope is that education can help counteract the effects of poverty and that the children will go on to become active members of their own communities, helping to shape the future of Cambodia.

“This European tour would not have been possible without the support of past volunteers who have helped us in Cambodia over the past three years. They have been instrumental in organizing each event in their home towns, spending much of their time and money to set up the events. The overall reaction to the exhibitions has been inspiring – it’s truly a global network of people that keeps our doors open.”

About us:
The Cambodian Children’s Painting Project (CCPP) is a grass roots initiative working with some of the country’s poorest children. Cambodia is one of the very poorest countries of South East Asia and CCPP’s aim is to create a brighter future for these kids through art and education.

CCPP is a continuation of an activity initiated by Roger Dixon, a professional artist, who came to Cambodia to paint on Sihanoukville’s beaches in the early 1990s. The local children were intrigued by this man and his paints and wanted to try it for themselves. So Roger brought the necessary materials with him the following season and the children started to paint. The activity proved so popular and successful that Roger made it into a regular feature during his annual visits to Sihanoukville, financing it from his limited personal means. Backed up by an enthusiastic group of local volunteers the activity grew in size and scope, and diversified.

In April 2006, CCPP was registered as an NGO to provide the project with a legal status and to make it possible to sustain and expand its activities. Since its humble beginnings almost three years ago, over four hundred children have been a part of the initiative. CCPP now provides the children with not only access to painting, craft and sports activities, but also two meals a day, access to medical and dental assistance and most importantly, an opportunity to receive a proper education. CCPP also runs English and computing classes in-house, in addition to sponsoring all the children to attend Khmer school full time.

In 2007 CCPP moved from its modest beach shack to a safer location off the beach, more appropriate for the children and their needs. The new centre has a range of facilities including a large painting studio, clean bathrooms and a full kitchen, as well as an indoor gallery space, education classrooms and volunteer accommodation.

Most of the regularly attending children no longer sell their bracelets and wares along the beach, yet they continue to earn money to help support their families through the sale of their paintings from the CCPP gallery. Paintings are sold for $4. Two dollars go to the child’s family, and $2 goes into CCPP’s communal education fund which we use to offer all our children a chance to attend Khmer school, paying school fees and providing uniforms, bags, books and pens and any ongoing costs such as one-on-one tutoring.

The children now spend their spare time playing, painting and interacting with CCPP’s staff and volunteers at the centre. In a sense, they have been given back their youth, with a chance to be kids again for a couple of hours a day, and are protected, out of harm’s way.

Time shifts and figures from myth and ritual collide; Gods emerge amongst frenzied cheerleaders, murderous strangers, dogs of war and bedraggled homecoming queens, in a heart-searching dance work of savage beauty.

Love and War is the Mark Bruce Company’s latest full-length production since its critically acclaimed Sea of Bones.

“the seven characters in Love and War turn out to be darker and more potent than any circus troupe.” The Guardian

“Love And War is an intoxicating carnival of emotions that’s bursting with violent passion, rich symbolism and genuine beauty” – Suit Yourself Magazine

“Bruce’s choreography has never looked more inventive, with classically based moves twisted into ferocious gestures of destruction or strung out into decadent ennui. The dancers are excellent.” (Sea of Bones) The Guardian

She’ll be touring Outlaster, her first record since 2007′s You Follow Me, the collobaration with Jim White of Dirty Three.

if you aren’t familiar, think chamber pop /folk in the mould of:

Here’s steve albini on the debut record he engineered:

In the process of making a record, you hear it so many times that the charms of even the best of them can wear off through over-exposure. On rare occasions, records I’ve worked on have withstood this scrutiny and ended up being personal favorites. Nina Nastasia’s ‘Dogs’ is a record so simultaneously unassuming and grandiose that I can’t really describe it, except in terms that would make it (and me) sound silly. Of the couple thousand records I’ve been involved with, this is one of my favourites, and one that I’m proud to be associated with.”

About the N.A.A.M.

Newcastle Asian Arts and Music is a voluntary organisation that was formed in April 1993. Its main aim is to promote Asian arts, music and culture within Newcastle and the North East region.

The main emphasis in N.A.A.M activities is upon the provision of a safe and supportive environment, therefore allowing the opportunities for all the community members to fully participate in events such as the Mela.

What is Mela?

‘Mela’ originate from the Indian sub continent: the word Mela comes from the Sanskrit “to meet” and is related to the word “milana”. It is commonly used to describe a large gathering of people celebrating artistic, religious or political events – a fair or a festival.

In the same way that many fairs or holidays in Europe would begin on the feast days of saints, Melas in south Asia have their origins in religious gatherings such as Eid Vaisakhi or Diwali.

Celebrations form an immeasurably important part of the sub-continent’s fabric. Melas are feasts of sights, smells, sounds and tastes and will often feature bazaars, folk troupes, traditional and contemporary and modern music and dance.

Newcastle Mela attracts 30,000 people every year.

The Mela is a free event based around Punjabi, Pakistani, Bengali, Hindi and other South Asian cultures, and is open to anyone who wants to learn more, be entertained and meet new people as well as enjoy different music, art and food in the heart of Newcastle.

With a line up including the hottest contemporary Asian acts as well as traditional displays of music and dance it’s an event likely to appeal to all ages and races.

Taking place in Exhibition Park, the Mela promises to be weekend full of fun with music, games, stalls and exhibitions to help everyone have a great weekend! With a stage playing host to musicians and dancers, hundreds of stalls selling arts and crafts and food and drink and a children’s programme to help the kids learn, make friends and have fun; there’s plenty to do whatever your tastes.

Further details as soon as they become available!

Shindig 18th Anniversary- 18 Years In Clubland

Standing proud of a reputable 18 years cultivating club land, Shindig has trodden its own path from the old World Headquarters (Club Afrika) where it all began in the 90’s, to now celebrating a major milestone in throwing parties for its loyal mix of night crawlers.

Over two decades in its long and illustrious career, amid various walls and open spaces, Shindig has boxed an uncompromising vibe together with a genuine subculture that is cultivated not bought. Since way back in 1992, Shindig has been responsible for bringing the best talent across the House, Techno and Electronic worlds to the North East; Mention the term “House Music”, amongst Newcastle’s proud cobbled alleys of clubbing and Shindig’s reputation will most certainly come up in conversation.

Kicking off a full UK Tour, celebrating their 18th Anniversary for the duration of 2010, Claude Von Stroke will be blowing out the candles at World Headquarters on Saturday 1st May, in the good company of Get Physical and BBC Radio1’s Heidi. In the comfortable surroundings of downstairs, OOFT Music’s Ali Herron alongside the creative trio One20, will be providing deep-as-you-like house, forgotten funk and more.

Don’t miss Shindig turning 18…old enough to go to our old club…
