Shindig 18th Anniversary- 18 Years In Clubland

Standing proud of a reputable 18 years cultivating club land, Shindig has trodden its own path from the old World Headquarters (Club Afrika) where it all began in the 90’s, to now celebrating a major milestone in throwing parties for its loyal mix of night crawlers.

Over two decades in its long and illustrious career, amid various walls and open spaces, Shindig has boxed an uncompromising vibe together with a genuine subculture that is cultivated not bought. Since way back in 1992, Shindig has been responsible for bringing the best talent across the House, Techno and Electronic worlds to the North East; Mention the term “House Music”, amongst Newcastle’s proud cobbled alleys of clubbing and Shindig’s reputation will most certainly come up in conversation.

Kicking off a full UK Tour, celebrating their 18th Anniversary for the duration of 2010, Claude Von Stroke will be blowing out the candles at World Headquarters on Saturday 1st May, in the good company of Get Physical and BBC Radio1’s Heidi. In the comfortable surroundings of downstairs, OOFT Music’s Ali Herron alongside the creative trio One20, will be providing deep-as-you-like house, forgotten funk and more.

Don’t miss Shindig turning 18…old enough to go to our old club…

Today’s electronic dance culture is witnessing a change in direction. From the typical house and techno sounds that have been hammering away at the scene, dance floors have started to buckle and fresh sounds are emerging. At the forefront of this renaissance are Belgium-based band Aeroplane. They strive to avoid the constraints of predictability by weaving currents of psychedelic guitars, pop keys, disco beats, catchy bass lines and melancholic waves into modern beat-driven music. Aeroplane are Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca, a duo whose combined experience gives life and emotion to the music.

With stellar remixes for Robbie Williams, Friendly Fires, Sebastien Tellier and Grace Jones amongst others, an eagerly awaited debut album in the works and a packed upcoming festival diary including Coachella and Glastonbury this date marks a rare intimate gig for Aeroplane.

The O2 Academy on the Westgate Road in Newcastle city centre has something to entertain revellers virtually every night of the year: Newcastle was crying out for such a venue for a long time after the Mayfair shut its doors on Newgate Street for redevelopment of the area, and duly got what it craved when the Bingo Hall on the same premises shut its doors a few years ago!

Since then, the Academy has been packed out night after night showing the very best musical talent available in the UK, becoming an established part of the UK touring scene for leading and upcoming bands.

With a slightly more independent feel than that other famous venue the City Hall, and more intimate than Newcastle Arena, the academy is a firm favourite amongst Indie music fans and fans of upcoming talent on Tyneside.

Furthermore, it includes a smaller separate space within the venue, called Academy 2, holding about 400 people that specialises in putting on up and coming local acts.

Over recent years the Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and Hard Fi have all played the venue and the Academy continues to put on great bands throughout the year.

The Academy also hosts club nights, the most famous of which is ‘Bulletproof’ showcasing the best of new and established Indie music and is the oldest club night of its kind in the region, being acknowledged by NME for its reputation in hosting bands who go on to succeed in the big time.

You can pay on the door for Bulletproof nights, but it usually starts getting very busy later on so arrive before 9.00pm to avoid queues or disappointment!

Opening Times:

The Box Office is shut on Sundays but open every other day from 12.00pm until 4.00pm except Thursdays, when it stays open until 6.00pm

How To Find O2 Academy Newcastle:

The great thing about the O2 Academy is its location – you don’t have to trek off to the edge of town somewhere to see the gig you want like in some other cities!

It is centrally located and easy to get to from the Central Station Metro or Monument Metro.

Being Newcastle upon Tyne, there are also plenty of bars and restaurants in the area to start your night off, or if you still have the energy, to finish it!

In our first party of the 2010 we welcome the legendary Samuel L Session and we see the return of our 2009 DJ Contest winners Josh Burlo and Greg Van Danceimus………

Back in 1988 Samuel bought his first mixer and a pair of regular turntables. That was his first step into the music business. Mixing everything from hiphop, house and techno he began to explore the phenomenon of mixing.

In 1991 he formed a party organization with his friend Max Reich, and started to pull off parties around Gothenburg. During the same time Samuel also started spinning outside his bedroom.

When Max got a proper studio in 1995, he felt it was time to take a step further. So he asked Max to teach him the basics about producing. A couple of months after that they formed Solid Beat, a techno label distributed by Neuton.

As time went by Samuel’s skills became more and more polished. He felt he was ready to move on by himself. Samuel needed to start something of his own.

1997 was the year when the first “Cycle” came out in the shops. Titled “Techno Soul Pt 1″, it contained laidback grooves for cool out corners.

In the first two years he only released three, but in late spring of 1999 he decided to really have a go on it. And that’s when things really took off for Samuel. “In Your Box” became his breakthrough record. Being played by people like Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Umek among others, people out there really started to take notice of him.

The following release, “Check Out This I Bring” made him even more shiny as a wider range of jockeys span his wax. The phone started to ring more and more frequently, asking for his services regarding spinning, remixing and releasing. He quickly became a known face at various clubs and events around the world.

Before he put “Cycle” on a break in 2001 to form “SLS”, eleven releases had seen the light of day. Now with “SLS” on hand he felt trying out other parts of the spectrum . “New Soil” became the first one, a double pack filled with warm, more melodic grooves. The first track,”Velvet”, became a hit on the floors and were soon hailed as a classic.

In the same period Samuel got invited to do a remix of “Visions Of You” by Blake Baxter & Trevor Rockcliffe. Already a classic record, he was more then pleased to put his own touch on it. Another big tune he remixed in that time was FunkDvoid..s “Diabla” on Soma. It became a well played mix by many.

When “Merengue” came out soon after, it was one of his best selling records ever. Slam and Oliver Ho all contributed to the success as their mixes were more then appreciated.

In 2006 it was time for a big change as Samuel felt he needed another direction and a new challenge in music. “Klap Klap” was born. A Slower, funkier and sometimes deeper sound were formed in the studio.

With this totally new approach he reached out to a bit different and wider audience then before. The highpoint on the label is without any doubts “Can You Relate”. It was a track with just the right combinations released at the right time that probably made it so big. DJs in all kind of camps put their hands on it!

With this track in his discography he quickly became a sought after name in a way he wasn’t used to from before. Widespread appeal is the best word to use here as he received offers from unexpected places and people. Slam, Steve Rachmad, Joris Voorn and Martin H have so far been doing successful remixes of it, and it seems like “Can You Relate” will become a true and modern classic.

With this behind him, except for playing, he focused mostly on doing a lot of remixes in the studio. Kevin Saunderson, Jerome Sydenham, Audio Soul Project, Len Faki and Alexi Delano among others, all had their music tweaked and remade by the man. He kept evolving both behind the decks and in the studio, trying to perfect his touch on things.

Samuel now felt that he was on fire due to all the work and appreciation, so he needed to go one more step further. It was time for an album. “Be As One” approached him regarding this, and the timing couldn’t have been better. A deal was done and he started to work on it.

By Spring 2009 he was finished and the result is nothing but excellent. Laurent Garnier, Rolando, Francois Kevorkian, Christian Smith and Adam Beyer are some of the people that have already embraced Samuel’s new work.

In support of Maryn’s forthcoming FABRIC 50 ALBUM!

Martyn has provided body moving funk to the dance floors since the mid nineties. A
love for Detroit techno, Chicago house and hip-hop fueled his need to be seriously
involved in music. When exposed to drum & bass in 1995, Martyn was destined to take
things further musically and began to lay the foundations of his career as a DJ, producer
and promoter.

Fast forward 15 years and Martyn has become one of the most in demand producers and DJ’s worldwide. The key figure in Dubstep/Techno crossover, Martyn teamed up with Erosie (one of Europe’s most well known street artists) and started his label 3024, an outlet for all the music (in various styles) Martyn is producing and collaborations with other artists, such as 2562 and Flying Lotus.

Through 3024 Martyn released one of 2009’s most eagerly anticipated and critically acclaimed albums; his own: GREAT LENGTHS…

Described by Laurent Garnier:

“The true genius of techno right now, the most forward-thinking techno at the moment, because he has understood and digested everything and put it into his music—dubstep, techno, everything. He’s not closing himself to any one style.”

As a DJ, Martyn has played illustrous venues such as Berghain, Robert Johnson, Fabric,
Plastic People, Watergate, The End, Cielo, Club Love and festivals like BLOC, Mutek,
Iceland Airwaves, Bestival, Lowlands and Sonar…on Saturday January 30th Martyn returns to Deviate @ WHQ.
