Out of Town Retail Centres in Newcastle

Newcastle upon Tyne is a haven of retail heaven, and what many people have discovered on retail therapy sessions is that this is not just resigned to the city centre, but there are great deals to be found at the retail centres around the outskirts.

Here are just a couple of examples of shopping experiences outside of the City centre that are as big a part of any shopping trip as any other!

The MetroCentre

The MetroCentre is located on the outskirts of Gateshead, west of Newcastle.

The MetroCentre boasts over 330 stores with 50 restaurants and cafes and even a large Odeon Cinema, so definitely has something for everyone!

The cinema and restaurants have later opening times. 

Travelling to the MetroCentre by car couldn’t be easier and is very clearly signposted: it is located next to the A1 just after the turn off for Gateshead, and just before the A1 passes over the River Tyne.

At the MetroCentre you are sure to find all the big names you want under one roof, with such department stores as Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and House of Fraser.

The Galleries

The Galleries is found in Washington, just south of Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead.

The Galleries has over two hundred retail stores boasting a huge number of large names such as Dorothy Perkins, New Look, Select, JJB Sports, Thornton’s, Boots, Clarks, Bon Marche and Barratts Shoes and many others.

As wellas the more famous names in retail, there are also many smaller stalls where ocal proprietors sell their wares.

You can get to the Galleries by car by travelling to Washington centre just off the A1231 (not far from both the A1 and A19). There is free parking at The Galleries.

By public transport, all buses to the Washington area pass by The Galleries, which amounts to some 1000 bus journeys a day!

Christmas Fashion Ideas from Emma Newman of Emma’s Boutique

As the dark nights have suddenly crept up on us our thoughts seem to naturally drift towards the Xmas party season. It may be a big night out with the girls, the work Xmas do, or a family get-together, but we always plan our outfits in advance to make sure we are as dazzling as the fairy lights on the tree!

The High Street is now full of cocktail dresses, fabulous embellished tops and sparkly sequin minis (which I adore!). My tip with anything that sits high above the knee is to wear super thick opaque tights to spare your blushes- far better to be demure if you plan on drinking lots of Cosmopolitans! As expected, I tend to keep my outfits simple and focus on my accessories, meaning I can re-use items in my wardrobe or invest in classic pieces. Zara have a fantastic range of shift and cocktail dresses in a huge range of colours – pick out jewel colours such a Ruby and Teal – which can be used as office wear, then ‘jazzed’ up for impromptu cocktails after work. Keep a pair of killer heels under the desk just in case!

The 80s seem to have made another comeback (Why do we all like shoulder pads and birds nest hair so much?!), so expect to see neon, puffball skirts, animal prints and sequins aplenty. Dorothy Perkins have this fab sequin blazer in stock, perfect for teaming with some skinny jeans and heels. If this is sequin overkill (shameless plug alert!), Emma’s Boutique have this lovely sequin clutch in a range of colours (Silver, Purple, Blue and Black). We also love this fab snakeskin clutch. It seems everyone else does too as it’s flying at our ‘I Want It..’ Parties. These mini handbags will continue to be a staple style over the coming seasons, so invest in a style and fabric that has a timeless appeal.

Gateshead’s Older People’s Festival

 
For the whole of October 2009, from the 1st to 31st, Gateshead’s second Looking Forward Festival is being run throughout the area with a huge selection of events for the older members of the community.
 
The aim of the Looking Forward 2009 Festival is encourage local people to try out new activities and make new friends, as well as putting the spotlight on many services that already exist in Gateshead for the older community.
 
There is also a diary of special events running throughout October 2009, with the aim to highlight what already is provided as well as encouraging people to come forward with their own ideas and requests to help the Council move forward with the planning of services into the future.
